talk about
04:53
mental health awareness it’s to talk
04:55
about a subject
04:57
that quite honestly is close to my heart
04:59
it’s close to
05:01
the hearts of of other individuals
05:04
and it’s about recognizing what we as an
05:08
employer
05:09
can do for our businesses for our
05:12
employees
05:14
for us as individuals so over the next
05:17
few minutes
05:18
what i’m going to be doing on screen is
05:20
giving you
05:21
some tips and giving you some
05:24
pointers
05:27
before we kick off that let’s talk about
05:30
what is actually happening on screen now
05:31
you can
05:32
you understand you know if you’re a
05:34
business owner if you’re an hr leader
05:36
but unfortunately due to the climate
05:38
that we’re in redundancies
05:40
are happening more off
05:43
nice it’s not pleasant and it’s
05:45
something that i know as business
05:46
leaders we don’t wish that anybody would
05:48
go through that
05:49
however if you do if you need to
05:51
undertake
05:52
a redundancy situation then we can help
05:55
you
05:56

07:35
all right so the last thing to touch on
07:37
before we click

07:40
is to talk about
07:41

08:00

08:03
today is the beginning of children’s
08:06
mental health awareness week
08:08
running for a week from the first to the
08:10
seventh
08:11
of february and i think one of the
08:13
things that we’ve identified here
08:16
over the past few months over the past
08:17
12 months if you will
08:19
is that the mental health awareness of
08:21
our children is
08:22
extremely key and very important on a
08:25
previous podcast episode entitled
08:27
breaking education
08:28
we broke that down and we discussed it
08:30
even more
08:31
with three influential figures nigel
08:34
evans former uh principal and now
08:36
current ceo of weymouth college here in
08:38
dorset
08:39
sarah brazner who was the teenage coach
08:41
and and a teacher who
08:43
wished to remain anonymous and if you
08:45
haven’t listened to that episode
08:47
please go back and get it from our
08:48
archives because it is such a powerful
08:51
hour and a half hour and 40 minutes
08:53
because these guys
08:54
don’t pack any punches they they say
08:58
really what’s going through their mind
09:00
and
09:01
you know it was quite hitting hearing
09:04
about how the mental health of the
09:05
teachers not only the kids but the
09:07
teachers
09:08
and the staff are being affected you
09:10
know we’re expecting them just like the
09:11
nhs workers go out on the front line
09:13
um and work with our kids and meet
09:15
different families and
09:17
um are we actually supporting them
09:20
it’s a question to ask what’s your
09:22
what’s your views on it what’s your
09:23
point let me know in the chat
09:25
uh at youtube forward slash uh jurassic
09:28
hr
09:29
or here on facebook
09:32
so mental health awareness children’s
09:34
mental health awareness it’s very
09:35
important
09:36
that we look after ourselves we look
09:39
after our kids before our own health and
09:40
well-being
09:41
and that’s one of the major topics
09:43
that’s on the hr agenda throughout 2021
09:47
so here are some top tips on what you
09:50
can do
09:51
to look after uh your own mental health
09:55
and well-being you can reframe
09:58
some unhelpful thoughts now this is the
10:01
way we think
10:02
the way we feel and the way we behave
10:05
are all linked
10:06
and what happens is sometimes we develop
10:08
patterns of thoughts or behaviors
10:10
that are unhelpful so when we recognize
10:13
them
10:14
and when we take steps to think about
10:16
things differently
10:17
we can actually improve our own mental
10:20
health we can break
10:22
our cycles of anxiety
10:26
we can be in the present we can take
10:28
time
10:29
to be aware of ourselves and be in the
10:31
present moment
10:32
notice our own thoughts and our own
10:34
feelings and the world around us
10:37
in that respect gain a much better
10:39
understanding and a better perspective
10:42
and this is called within coaching terms
10:45
as being more
10:46
mindful there are various apps that you
10:50
can get
10:50
on both ios and android which are
10:53
mindfulness
10:54
and meditation apps and it’s really
10:55
recommended to get them because what you
10:57
can do is take a few minutes out
10:59
and literally just have the app playing
11:02
in the background and it calms
11:03
you down and i’m going to give you some
11:04
personal experience a little bit later
11:06
on
11:07
one of the key ones is getting good
11:10
sleep
11:11
good quality sleep really does make a
11:13
big difference to how we feel both
11:15
mentally and physically so it’s
11:18
important
11:19
that we get enough how many people
11:22
as we’re in lockdown at the moment um
11:26
are kind of going that’s all right i’m
11:28
working from home
11:29
you know i might have a bit of a late
11:30
night uh i’ll get up and
11:32
i’ll just get up when i need to and get
11:34
into work
11:36
having that regular routine having that
11:38
seven eight hours worth of sleep is key
11:40
and some people don’t need it some
11:42
people do i’m a sleep monster um i
11:45
i need uh my minimum of eight hours
11:47
sleep at night otherwise i have an
11:49
absolute nightmare to live with the next
11:52
day
11:52
uh but then so is my wife so we we kind
11:55
of get used to that
11:58
other tips to consider uh connecting
12:01
with others and this is
12:02
really important now that we’re in
12:04
lockdown 3.0
12:06
make sure that you spend time quality
12:09
time with friends and family
12:12
speak to someone about how you’re
12:14
feeling or
12:15
find ways to help other people can
12:18
really in this day and age
12:19
all stop us from feeling lonely and
12:21
improve our mental health and well-being
12:24
now as we know we’re in lockdown 3 which
12:26
means that
12:27
going out is prohibited we can see one
12:28
other person if we go for a walk
12:30
and we’re relying on video calls
12:33
and audio calls via online or via the
12:36
old method iphone
12:38
make sure you’re doing it guys make sure
12:40
you’re making regular time
12:42
to speak to someone who you know who you
12:45
trust who you want to have a beer with
12:47
over zoom
12:48
um just have a chat and try and carry on
12:50
as much as you can
12:52
because social contact is extremely
12:55
important for our mental health
12:57
and you may not feel like engaging with
13:00
others
13:01
when you’re feeling low or when you’re
13:02
feeling anxious but
13:04
please consider doing it reach out to
13:07
someone
13:07
if you feel you need to talk to someone
13:11
live a healthy life and that’s easier
13:13
said than done when you’re in the middle
13:14
of winter and it’s cold and wet and
13:16
snowy in some parts of the country
13:18
but being active enjoying the outdoors
13:21
having a healthy
13:22
and balanced diet actually impacts how
13:24
we feel
13:27
cutting out things or bidding them
13:28
completely like smoking
13:30
or cutting down on alcohol and caffeine
13:32
can really have
13:34
a positive effect on our overall mood
13:40
you could look to do something for
13:42
yourself
13:43
it could be enjoying your hobby learning
13:46
something new
13:46
or taking some time to relax it’s
13:48
important
13:50
to do things that really make us happy
13:53
you could try a new hobby or you could
13:54
learn a new skill
13:56
so one of the things that i’ve heard uh
13:59
over the past few months is people
14:00
really trying to step out of their
14:02
comfort zone
14:03
and look at different things that they
14:05
could do and some of them have opened
14:07
podcasts
14:08
uh and trying to get their message out
14:10
there if that’s what they’re interested
14:11
in
14:12
other people have started writing a book
14:14
and it sounds really crazy but they’re
14:15
going look you know
14:16
i’ve never had time to do it when
14:20
when we were out on lockdown when we
14:21
were working full-time i’m taking
14:23
that moment to get my thoughts out on on
14:26
paper on air
14:30
so find something that you want to do
14:34
okay but one thing that you
14:38
can’t be afraid to do and that is
14:42
to request mental health support
14:45
you can’t be afraid in this day and age
14:48
to say
14:49
i need help or i really need to speak to
14:52
someone
14:54
there’s no stigma attached to it anymore
14:56
there’s no um there’s no prejudice or
14:58
discrimination against you for saying
15:00
that
15:02
taking the ball by the horns if you will
15:04
and realizing that you need to talk to
15:05
someone it’s brave
15:07
it’s courageous it’s commendable
15:12
please do it please pick up the phone
15:15
ring a friend ring a family member ring
15:17
a charities like mind
15:18
or the samaritans talk to someone
15:22
from a business perspective what could
15:25
you do
15:26
as a business leader to help your
15:28
employees
15:30
how do you manage your employees now
15:32
that we’re in a remote working
15:34
environment
15:37
do you have regular zoom calls do you
15:39
have regular
15:40
one-to-ones where you break the door
15:42
down do you have regular social events
15:44
overzoo
15:46
have a think about what it is that you
15:49
do and what it is that you could do to
15:51
engage more
15:52
you know as a business leader and a
15:53
manager you’re people better than
15:56
than anyone you know
15:59
their personalities you know their
16:01
characteristics and as a manager you’re
16:03
more likely
16:04
to identify if you feel that someone is
16:07
not
16:09
in the right frame of mind try and help
16:13
them
16:14
reach out to them
16:17
i’m going to share with you um some
16:20
stories about my past
16:22
and one thing i didn’t want this podcast
16:24
to be was a personal account and a
16:26
personal journey but i think it’s
16:28
important when you do subjects and
16:29
topics like this to kind of
16:31
open up i’ve said before that i was a
16:35
carer
16:36
for uh my father from the age of four
16:39
really and during that time
16:43
my my old man had 16 17 strokes was
16:46
completely paralyzed down the one side
16:50
but i didn’t think anything different
16:52
about it because
16:55
for me it was normal you know my life
16:57
was
16:58
what it was it was normal i didn’t miss
17:00
out on anything i didn’t miss out on
17:02
um family i didn’t miss out on friends i
17:05
didn’t miss out on family
17:09
but when he passed was a sudden
17:14
gap there was a sudden um
17:17
void in my life because everything i’d
17:20
done
17:20
had been for my family and it had been
17:22
for my father in the background
17:26
i didn’t co very well i really didn’t i
17:29
struggled
17:30
i struggled because i didn’t know how to
17:32
manage the feelings
17:34
and the emotions that i had going
17:36
through me at that point
17:39
you’re not prepared for it you’re not
17:42
prepared
17:43
for what goes through your mind on any
17:46
one day and and i fell into anxiety
17:48
and i didn’t grieve properly and what
17:51
happened was
17:53
it made me ill i didn’t recognize that
17:57
i didn’t recognize that that i was ill
18:00
i just thought i was really sad
18:04
i thought it was a standard part of the
18:06
actual process
18:07
but it wasn’t it was a case of i didn’t
18:10
realize that i was slipping further and
18:12
further
18:12
into an anxiety spiral or a depression
18:15
spiral
18:16
and it’s only when my wife helped me
18:20
and helped me recognize that i was
18:23
struggling did i seek help
18:26
now i’m bonnie is a lad
18:29
i can recognize now when i feel i’m
18:32
going into an anxious spin
18:34
i can feel when i am going into a low
18:37
mood
18:38
and now i can deal with it and i can
18:40
deal with it
18:41
because of the people that are around me
18:43
the support network that i’ve developed
18:45
and the skills that i’ve learned from
18:47
counseling or
18:48
cbt by using groups such as steps for
18:53
well-being
18:55
again it comes back to the nhs from
18:57
being able to talk
18:59
to my friends my family even my
19:02
coworkers
19:03
when i was in corporate
19:08
you may feel that you’re alone
19:11
but you’re really not there are people
19:13
there
19:14
people around you that you may not even
19:16
consider to be there
19:18
are there to help
19:22
reach out and if someone reaches out to
19:25
try and help you
19:26
don’t push back
19:29
listen to what they’re saying feel free
19:32
to talk and it’s not easy
19:33
it’s really not but when you do it
19:37
the minute you start opening up the
19:40
minute
19:40
that you start realizing and
19:43
talking about these emotions that’s
19:45
going through your mind
19:47
the you suddenly feel a massive weight
19:50
come off your shoulder
19:55
so we’ve talked about some of the top
19:57
tips for us individually
20:00
and we’ve talked about some questions
20:02
about what you as managers
20:04
could do but what you need to do as well
20:06
is think about in your businesses what’s
20:08
your wellness strategy
20:10
what can you do as an organization
20:13
to ensure the mental well-being of your
20:16
team
20:18
do you have processes in place that
20:20
recognize
20:21
when individuals are struggling
20:26
if not how do you do that where do you
20:29
look
20:32
when the audio archive of this show
20:34
comes up uh when it’ll be available on
20:37
jurassic hr.com and on all the main
20:39
platforms within the narrative
20:41
there will be a link and that link will
20:43
take you to our website and that will be
20:45
for a free resource
20:46
and there’ll be a mental health tips
20:48
sheet and on that sheet we’ll list some
20:51
of the tips that we’ve talked about
20:52
today
20:53
and some of the ideas that you as a
20:54
business owners can implement
20:57
it’s a free resource it’s available for
20:59
you to download
21:02
please use it and if you are unsure
21:07
whether or not you are doing the right
21:09
thing or whether or not you’ve got a
21:11
situation that you
21:12
think as a leader as a manager is out of
21:15
your control
21:17
contact us contact us and have a chat
21:20
and we will help you where we can
21:24
concerns that you think that there is a
21:27
welfare issue
21:29
for this individual then you need to
21:32
take action
21:33
and you need to work with them
21:39
child mental health as we said at the
21:42
top of the show
21:42
takes place from today the 1st of
21:44
february right the way through
21:46
to the 7th of february and in this era
21:49
of homeschooling
21:50
in this era of child being socially
21:54
deprived from others and not having the
21:55
normal routine that they once had it’s
21:58
important
21:59
that as parents as teachers
22:03
as business leaders with employees who
22:05
are homeschooling as homeschool parents
22:07
ourselves
22:08
that we try and identify and look at how
22:12
our kids are feeling has their behavior
22:16
changed
22:18
has the way they interact with you
22:20
changed
22:23
and there are various areas that you can
22:25
go to to speak to but one of them that i
22:27
really recommend having a look at is
22:30
place to be dot org dot uk
22:33
and that’s a charity which improves
22:36
children’s mental health and its patron
22:38
is kate middleton now they are doing
22:42
events and activities throughout
22:45
this week and there are resources
22:48
available throughout this week
22:50
that will help anyone from teachers
22:54
to parents to employers
22:57
work to ensure that parents
23:01
and kids are looked after you can see
23:03
the link at the bottom
23:05
of the screen for over 25 years
23:09
this charity have provided mental health
23:12
services in schools
23:13
and they are guided by our their mission
23:17
and their mission quite simply is to
23:19
improve children and young people’s
23:21
mental health
23:22
and they believe that no child or no
23:24
young person
23:25
should have to face mental health
23:26
problems alone
23:28
and their vision is that
23:32
they will provide the support that young
23:34
children
23:35
and young people need to build lifelong
23:38
coping
23:39
skills and they do that by providing
23:42
high quality mental health services in
23:44
schools
23:45
backed by research building confidence
23:47
knowledge in schools
23:49
to promote a better understanding of
23:51
mental health and wellbeing
23:53
they build a mental health workforce
23:55
that can support children and young
23:56
people
23:57
and they raise awareness of both
23:59
children and young people’s mental
24:01
health
24:02
everywhere from the government to the
24:04
general public
24:09
so place to be dot org dot uk
24:13
if you’re a parent in your home
24:15
schooling or you know someone who’s
24:16
homeschooling
24:17
is a worthwhile resource with some great
24:19
free resources that you can bring in
24:24
mental health first aiders is a
24:27
terminology that we’ve been using
24:28
a lot over the past 18 months to two
24:31
years now within business
24:33
and it’s really become the forefront
24:34
because these are people who
24:36
although not medically trained and not
24:38
counselors
24:40
are ones who are able to work and talk
24:43
and speak with our employees
24:45
as a business do you have adequate
24:48
mental health first data within your
24:49
organization
24:51
as a business do you have an appropriate
24:54
network of mhfas
24:56
that employees know about that employees
25:00
are comfortable speaking with
25:03
if you don’t there are organizations
25:06
throughout the country
25:07
that run training courses companies like
25:10
acas
25:12
and they will or if they don’t they’ll
25:13
provide resources and let you know where
25:15
to go
25:16
your local colleges and their fees will
25:18
be able to help you as well
25:22
having a mental health first aid network
25:24
in your business
25:25
during the normal was a welcome addition
25:29
but now that we’re in lockdown 3
25:31
it’s even more imperative
25:36
so that’s it for this edition
25:40
of the hr show thank you for joining me
25:43
not only on audio but on the live stream
25:47

25:49

27:25
with a lady called sam eaton from
27:27
mindability
27:28
uh which fits in really nicely with the
27:30
mental health awareness
27:32
sam is one of the it’s genuinely one of
27:34
the nicest people i’ve ever spoken to
27:36
uh in my podcasting career and some of
27:38
the content that we get coming out of
27:40
this
27:40
is incredible hearing sam’s openness
27:43
uh in her past stories and then to round
27:46
off the week on friday
27:48
again at 9 00 a.m on clubhouse we’ll be

27:54
anyone who wants a question from an hr
27:56
or a training perspective
27:58
to pop in ask and we’ll try and give you
28:01
the answer
28:02
